We’ve made yet another fun commercial that we think you’ll enjoy.

Paint Your Own Train At Terra Toys!

Monday, July 27th, 2009

For the past two years, our Paint Your Own Train event has been a big success.  Terra Toys provides a blank wooden train and lots of supplies so you can create the train of your dreams!  The boxcars and tankers come from the same company that makes Thomas Tank Engines.  You can copy Thomas and his friends, or create something entirely original.  And because they are standard-sized, they are compatible with Thomas, BRIO, Nuchi, and other wooden railway sets.  Kids as young as 3 can do this activity, but we recommend that all children are accompanied by an adult helper.

Tax Free Weekend, August 21-23, 2009

Monday, July 27th, 2009

This year the Texas Legislature expanded the list of items qualifying for exemption from sales taxes during Tax Free Weekend.  That means even more stuff is tax-free!

Terra Toys and Dragonsnaps Children’s Clothing sell many of the back-to-school items which are tax free.  And although lots of places sell clothes and school supplies, you may agree that ours often rank higher in terms of uniqueness and beauty.  Think of us when you go tax-free shopping this year!

Wizarding Wonders

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Oh wow, do I love Harry Potter.  I’m always stunned when I meet someone who hasn’t read any of the books yet – anyone who can get halfway through the first book will be hooked.  I’ve met lots of kids who started to love reading because of this series.  And the movies just keep getting better!  Can you believe it?  That many sequels and none of them boring? In celebration of the latest movie release, I present you with a few wizarding wonders.

We carry the entire Harry Potter series, as well as the schoolbooks Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.  The latest book from the Harry Potter-verse is The Tales of Beedle the Bard, the same book read by so many wizarding children in the series.  J.K. Rowling illustrated this one herself (the first seven copies were written out by hand and leather-bound!).  The stories themselves are fairly dry, but Dumbledore’s commentary is thought-provoking and hilarioius. $12.99

Rats, cats, and owls are popular wizard’s familiars.  We have several plush versions of each, including the snowy owl puppet.  He is soft and majestic, and his head is designed to turn round and round and round. $26

For your sweet tooth, we had Honeydukes Sweetshop ship over a few cartons of Fudge Flies. $7.75

Finally, the icing on the magical cake: these wands are made in Austin, hand-lathed, and stunning in beauty and quality.  Each is one of a kind.  The colors, lengths, and weights vary according to the wood that is chosen, and they have various embellishments like colored bands and inlaid jewels to cater to the tastes of the discerning wizard.  Do come in for a visit and hold each of them until you find just the right one.  Remember, the wand chooses you! $40 each

Summer Fun Toys

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

Take a step outside. Texas summer weather is hot. Soooooo hot. May we suggest taking the family for a swim? May we also suggest taking some Terra Toys with you?

For the beach, we have boats, inflatables, and sand toys, like this 5-piece Princess Beach Set.  It’s a more girly version of the standard, and it includes a shovel, rake, bucket, water can, and castle form. $13, 18 months and up.

For your backyard or neighborhood pool, we have water guns, diving toys, remote control submarines, and cool fishing toys like this one.  Catch of the Day is a battery-operated (water-safe) fish that swims around in the pool until a magnetic lure nears his mouth, at which point he chomps down and flops about wildly until you reel him in.  Far more realistic than the usual little magnetic fishing games (which we also often have in stock), this toy is fun for kids and hilarious for adult fishing enthusiasts. Includes fishing reel, fish, and two magnetic lures.  $25, 3+ years.

And if you just need a place to cool off, we keep the air conditioned to about 74 degrees at Terra Toys.  Spend a few hours playing here on a hot Sunday afternoon :)

You know that gum you like? It’s coming back in style.

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Now here’s something you don’t see every day: Nostalgia Chewing Gum.  This gum only goes into production every two or three years, so when you see it, you better snatch up a bunch.  Black Jack is licorice-flavored,  Clove tastes like… cloves.  Beeman’s gum is harder to describe: It was originally marketed in the early 1900s as a digestive aid.  Though it no longer contains pepsin, it’s spicy and tastes a bit like mint and Pepto Bismol with a hint of clove or licorice.  I know that might not sound appetizing, but I urge you to taste it for yourself.  Then you’ll understand why people get so excited when it comes back in stock. $1 per pack of 5 sticks.

We’re Open July 4th!

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

If you’re looking around on the site today, it’s probably because you’re wondering if we’re open.

We’re open today until 8pm, and we have tons of cool city-legal fireworks for your enjoyment. Sparklers, snappers, champagne poppers, black snakes, bomb bags, rainbow glasses…

Happy 4th!

New Papo Figures

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

We just got in a humongous amount of Papo, including cool new dragons, beast-men and knights, heavy-duty siege weaponry, several new horses and mega-adorable animals large and small.  We went crazy this month and ordered almost twice as many figures as usual, but it’s okay because they are SO AWESOME!  Note the magnificent attention to detail.  Even at 5" tall, they have realistic clothes and removable weapons, and for low prices!  (Usually about $5 to $12).  The T-Rex even has a jaw that opens and closes.  You have to see it to believe it!
